How do I know what drinking water contaminants I should test for?

Criterion offers test kits that are tailored to each customer. Our two most popular options are for homeowners with private wells (Well Water Kit) or on Municipal (City) provided water (Municipal Water Kit). If you are looking for something more comprehensive, you can order the Advanced Drinking water kit or if you have specific concerns, we have individual parameter kits (PFAS, microbiological, etc.).

Over-the-counter DIY test strips only provide rough, colorimetric estimates and frequently miss low- level toxic contaminants. Criterion Labs utilizes state-of-the-art analytical equipment (ICP-AES, GC-MS) to provide precise, certified laboratory quantification down to parts-per-billion (ppb) or parts-per-trillion (ppt) levels. An accredited lab report provides legally defensible data necessary for real estate transactions, medical evaluations, or installing proper filtration equipment.

Most of the residents in this area are on municipal water. The contaminants mainly come, not from the treatment Plant, but from the delivery system or even your home plumbing and fixtures. The most common complaints from municipal water are taste, smell, and staining. These are mainly due to chlorine, TDS, iron, lead, copper, and possibly bacteria. Our Municipal Water Kit covers all these issues and more. For clients on wells in the surrounding area, the main issues are usually bacteria, pH, hardness, metals, sulfur (Hydrogen Sulfide), and Nitrate/Nitrite. Our Well Water Kit covers all these tests and more.

Note: Research from Penn State indicates that more than half of all private wells in Pennsylvania have detectable levels of PFAS in them, with 18% of all wells exceeding the U.S. EPA’s Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCL) for safe drinking water!

  • Comprehensive Packages: Standard Drinking Water, Advanced Drinking Water, Well Water Safety Panels, Municipal Water Verification, and Disinfection Byproducts (DBP).
Every kit includes sterile collection containers, detailed instructions, and a Chain of Custody (CoC) form. Because microbiological samples (E. coli, Coliform, HPC) have strict 24-to-30-hour hold times and must remain chilled, samples should be returned via prepaid overnight shipping or dropped off directly at our Bensalem, PA laboratory in a sealed bag with ice packs (Monday through Thursday).
The EPA has classified water contaminants into 2 categories: Primary and Secondary. Primary contaminants are thought to have direct negative health effects if the water is consumed (ex. Bacteria, heavy metals, Nitrate, PFAS, etc.). Secondary contaminants are linked to water quality issues such as taste, odor, staining (ex. Hardness, iron, alkalinity, etc.).
Criterion’s reports are very easy to read. For each parameter we analyze, you will see it listed, along with the analytical method we used, your results, the units measured, what the EPA has listed and the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) for that parameter, and if your results “Pass” or “Fail” compared to the EPA’s MCL (where applicable).
Most contaminants can be treated, lowered, or removed altogether with the installation of water treatment systems. Criterion Laboratories, Inc. has evaluated prominent water treatment companies in the area based on knowledge, experience, quality of systems, and prior customer satisfaction. While we have no financial connection to these companies, we can make the referral list available to our test clients as a starting point for water remediation.
